Bonnie Holding, a Master Maine Guide and small business owner, was named director of information and education at the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Holding is a Master Maine Guide with 28 years of experience. For the past 23 years, she has also owned and operated her own business, the Gold/Smith Gallery at Sugarloaf Ski Resort.

Joanne Grant was recently hired as director of residential services at Hinckley by Day One.

Grant received her master’s degree in counseling with a concentration in clinical mental health from the University of Southern Maine.

Lauren Berry also joined Day One as a per diem awake overnight associate at its residential program at Buxton.

Berry is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine.

Amanda Campbell recently joined Pierce Promotions as a manager in their client services group.

Campbell previously worked as an account manager for The Boston Beer Company.

Michael Sullivan joined Unum as assistant vice president of market development.

Sullivan was previously the senior director of marketing at Idexx Laboratories for more than 12 years.

Rachel Bannister joined Patrons Oxford Insurance Company in Auburn as personal lines senior underwriter and marketing supervisor.

Bannister is active in the Maine Chapter of CPCU. She has more than 20 years of insurance experience.

Jimmy Quirion joined Macpage LLC, a certified public accounting firm, as a staff accountant.

Quirion, of Vassalboro, graduated from Thomas College in 2013 with a degree in accounting. He interned with the firm during the summer of 2013.

Jenna Herbert joined Diversified Communications as a project manager.

Herbert was previously employed with Accruent of Austin, Texas.

PROMOTIONS

Andrew Ellis was promoted to vice president, provider engagement and contracting at Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine.

Ellis previously served as contracting team lead for Anthem in Maine. Prior to joining Anthem in 2005, he held positions at the Law Office of James B. Barns in Falmouth, the State Department of Revenue Services in Augusta, and at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Paul Keenan was promoted to assistant vice president of short term disability in Unum’s US Benefit Operations business area.

Keenan will oversee the company’s short term disability benefit claim organization at its Portland campus. He was previously the assistant vice president of benefits research information. He has been with Unum for 31 years.

Kevin Welch was promoted to milieu coordinator at Day One’s residential program in Hollis.

BOARD APPOINTMENTS

Matthew Lancaster joined the board of directors for Day One, a treatment center in South Portland that provides substance abuse and mental health services for Maine’s youth.

Lancaster is co-owner of Mr. Bagel in Scarborough and Pine Point.

George Gervais and Jason Hallee were elected to the board of directors for the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

Gervais has served as commissioner of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development since 2011. Hallee has more than 17 years of manufacturing experience at one of the state’s leading medical device manufacturers.

AWARDS and RECOGNITIONS

Kathleen Cramer-Howe, an associate broker at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Portland, was honored with the Achievement Award.

The award is for excellence in all aspects of the real estate business. Cramer-Howe, of Cape Elizabeth, is a Senior Real Estate Specialist, Certified Negotiation Specialist, Accredited Staging Professional, Green Certified Designations of the National Association of Realtors.

Arnold Macdonald, Hawley Strait and Matt Tarasevich, three Bernstein Shur attorneys, were recognized with the Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent rating, the highest level of Martindale-Hubbell’s Peer Review rating system.

Macdonald is a member of Bernstein Shur’s Business Law Practice Group, Construction Law Practice Group and Real Estate Practice Group. He is also chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee.

Strait is a member of Bernstein Shur’s Real Estate Practice Group.

Tarasevich is co-chair of Bernstein Shur’s Labor and Employment Practice Group and a member of its Municipal and Regulatory Practice Group.

Fluid Imaging Technologies in Scarborough was recognized as the “Employer of the Year” for “providing excellent opportunities to the unemployed,” a news release said.

Don Foshay’s Discount Tire and Alignment of Hallowell was awarded the 2013 AAA Approved Auto Repair Independent Facility of the Year Award.

The award is presented by AAA Northern New England honoring one dealership and one independent repair facility in each of the three Northern New England states.

Don Foshay’s operates seven locations throughout Maine and has been in business for over 30 years.

Jennifer Granata, an emergency department nurse manager at Southern Maine Health Care, was recognized by the National Emergency Nurses Association with the 2014 ENA Nurse Manager Award.

Granata, of Scarborough, joined SMHC in 2002 as a staff nurse. In 2007, she became a nurse educator and was promoted to ED nurse manager in 2010. Granata also provides hands-on nursing care as a nurse practitioner.

Good Will-Hinckley’s Maine Academy of Natural Sciences in Fairfield was recognized by the Maine Conservation Alliance as a “Community Climate Champion” for its effort to reduce carbon pollution while providing students with educational opportunities.

GENERAL

Express Employment Professionals in Portland has opened a specialized recruiting group to serve the healthcare market in Maine.

The group is dedicated to providing major hospitals, clinics and homecare facilities throughout southern Maine with high-quality temporary, temp-to-hire, and permanent-hire employees.

The Seaside Group, Inc., a provider of vacation rentals in southern Maine, has acquired JoHank Rentals in Wells.

Messer is currently pursuing a degree in business administration and a certification as a financial planner.

 Robert Marcroft joined The Iris Network as resident services manager at the Iris Park Apartments.

Marcroft previously provided case management and advocacy services at Preble Street Veteran Housing Services and supported residents at Shalom House. He was also a residential technician at Serenity House, where he educated clients on relapse prevention techniques while assisting them with recovery.

 Gary Barron was named executive director of Camp Sunshine, a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Barron comes from SheerBliss Ice Cream in Sunrise, Florida, where he was the founder and served as president. He brings two decades of experience in fundraising, marketing and community outreach.

Previously, Barron served as deputy treasurer of the Democratic National Committee, where he oversaw the major donor program of the national party. Additionally, Barron worked in the White House under Presidents Ford, Carter and Reagan.

 Japhet Els joined the AARP Maine State Office as an outreach director.

Els has more than 10 years of experience in grassroots campaigns and communications including work for AARP Vermont on its multistate utilities campaign.

 Ed Brady joined the sales staff at Classic Flooring, 427 Route 1 in Scarborough.

Brady, of Scarborough, brings several years of experience in the flooring business.

Amita Nouchanthavong joined the firm as accounts receivable specialist in the receivables management services department.

Nouchanthavong previously worked as a manager for Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

Christopher O’Hara also joined Seafax’s receivables management services department as accounts receivable specialist. O’Hara previously worked in sales at Black Diamond Networks.

Erik Rousseau was recently hired as credit analyst in the credit department at Seafax. Rousseau previously worked as a manager at Play It Again Sports.

Todd, of Westbrook, was first hired 10 years ago and worked in marketing and as a personal lines underwriter. In this role, she will specialize in commercial property and casualty insurance.

 John Peters joined Eaton Peabody Consulting Group.

Peters brings 30 years of experience as a member of the management team for Downeast Energy Corp. He served as its president for the last 10 years. He managed the sale of Downeast and stayed for a year after the sale. He has extensive experience in management consulting, business succession planning, management of family-owned business, estate planning for small-business owners, energy markets and acquisitions.

GENERAL

• Day One has opened a new residential treatment center on the historic Good Will-Hinckley campus.

Day One is Maine’s leading agency preventing and treating youth substance abuse with more than 40 years of experience. It operates two homes in southern Maine.

The new home will serve as many as 14 Maine teenagers at a time. The six-month program addresses the underlying causes of substance abuse.

PROMOTIONS
Matthew Perry was promoted to community education and communications coordinator at Family Crisis Services.
He has worked as a trained domestic violence advocate for Family Crisis Services since 1999. He was the first man in Maine to staff one of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence 24-hour domestic violence crisis hot lines. He has facilitated over a thousand programs to more than 100,000 community members over his 16-year tenure.

AWARDS and RECOGNITIONS
Spurwink has announced that it will honor the Volk family of Scarborough for their autism awareness advocacy.
Derek Volk has recently written a book, “Chasing the Rabbit: A Dad’s Life Raising a Son on the Autism Spectrum.” He is president and co-owner of Volk Packaging Corp. in Biddeford. Amy Volk is the state senator for District 30, which includes most of Buxton and Scarborough and all of Gorham. Dylan Volk, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome at the age of 8, has joined his father in speaking publicly about autism and contributed to his father’s book. Daughters Mariah, Lilly and Serena Volk will also be among the honorees.

Sea Bags named official partner of 2016 Atlantic Cup

Sea Bags, designers and manufacturers of handmade items from recycled sails, was named an official partner of the 2016 Atlantic Cup.

The event, presented by 11th Hour Racing, spans 1,000 nautical miles and is the longest offshore race on the Eastern seaboard. The fifth edition of the race will start May 28 in Charleston, South Carolina. Teams will sail to New York for a brief stopover, then compete in the second leg of the race, 350 nautical miles to Portland, home-base for the Sea Bags business. The race ends with two days of inshore racing on Casco Bay.

“We’re so proud to be a part of the Atlantic Cup race,” Beth Shissler, president of Sea Bags said in a press release. “Its mission of being the most environmentally sustainable sailing race in the U.S. aligns perfectly with our own brand, which was founded on the principles of recycling and promoting a more sustainable way of life, in order to preserve our oceans for generations to come.”

United Nations to honor ‘kayaking grandmother,’ one of six Rotary Global Women of Action

Deb Walters, a member of the Rotary Club of Unity who is on a solo kayak expedition from Maine to Guatemala to raise awareness for Safe Passage, was chosen as one of six Rotary Global Women of Action.
She will be recognized on Nov. 7, World Rotary Day, at the United Nations in New York for her service to the people of Guatemala and her efforts to help break the cycle of multi-generational poverty.
Walters, a retired cognitive scientist, currently serves on the board for the Yarmouth-based non-profit Safe Passage (Camino Seguro). The organization provides education, health care, counseling, nutrition and community services to the children and families living in the Guatemala City garbage dump community. Working with other Rotarians, Walters has helped provide funds, leadership and hands-on service to that community. Most recently, she set out to complete a solo kayak expedition from Maine to Guatemala to raise $425,000 for Safe Passage’s programs, which serve nearly 2,400 students and their families—both young and old— every day.
“I am humbled that my service in Guatemala is being recognized by Rotary International and the United Nations,” said Walters said in a press release. “Achieving this level of recognition on the world stage will go a long way to bringing international attention to the plight of so many families in need. Through global collaboration, together we can lift these families out of chronic poverty and offer them hope for the future.”

The redevelopment of Sanford Mill took seven years from start to finish, according to Josh Benthien, a partner at Northland Enterprises. The mill is a mixed-use development that includes residential units, office and retail space.

• Bar Harbor Bank & Trust has hired Jeff Charland as vice president, regional relationship manager.

Charland, of Rockport, will work from the Rockland branch, 245 Camden St. He was previously with athenahealth as manager of credentialing services.

• Howard Strang recently joined Academy Mortgage as manager of its Portland branch.

Strang has more than 10 years of experience in the mortgage business. He brings experience as a loan originator for Pelican Capital, Arian & Associates and NE Moves Mortgage LLC.

• Jay Flower joined H.M. Payson in Portland as a portfolio manager.

Flower brings over 15 years of experience in portfolio management and investments. Most recently, he was a vice president and portfolio manager with Old Port Advisors in Portland.

• Kennebunk Savings recently announced executive management promotions.

Dennis Byrd was promoted to senior executive vice president. Byrd, of Gorham, is the bank’s chief operating officer and oversees information technology strategy and deployment, corporate facilities administration, deposit services and credit administration. He has been with Kennebunk Savings since 2007.

Lynn Howe was promoted to executive vice president and named the chief sales and delivery officer. She began working for Kennebunk Savings in 1998 as a commercial lender and was later promoted to corporate lending team leader. She lives in Arundel.

Jill Peter was promoted to executive vice president. Peter, of Gorham, is the company’s chief risk officer. She joined Kennebunk Savings in 2009 as the bank’s senior vice president of credit administration.

Jessica is a C6/C7 quadriplegic – paralyzed from mid-chest down with limited use of arms and hands. The design mandate for 363HOUSE was to support Jessica’s abilities and minimize barriers to an accessible life.
The second award went to WBRC Architects ∙ Engineers for their renovation of the Cross Insurance Arena. The renovations were designed to attract and accommodate larger shows and events, while offering visitors safer and equal access to Portland’s premier sports and entertainment venue.
